Highlighting Twitters most famous assets, this youtube video brings light to the many productive and new age functions Twitter provides internet users.
It is arguably the only platform that opens dialogue to a vast majority of people across the world without restrictions, giving them the ability to target their specific interests and gather information through various platforms. What I found to be particularly impressive about this awareness campaign was the video's primary message. Twitter used this as an opportunity to let viewers see the benefits of actively participating in the website by providing answers to these following questions:
1) What Do You Care About?
2)Who Do You Follow?
3) What Do You Want To Know?
4) How Do You Explore What's Out There?
By strategically choosing these questions to ask in the video, Twitter makes the viewer feel that their Twitter account will be their own personal platform - A place to share and explore things that specifically interest them but also be a part of something that is much bigger than them - something that stems out to reach people all around the world. Giving you the ability to impact others and let them have an impact on you.
Another strategic video decision Twitter made was to feature a broad array of pop culture figures to speak on behalf of Twitter. Musicians to astronauts, celebrities to political figures, local to global - each person spoke on their personal feelings was to why they have a Twitter and what they use their Twitter for. Their Twitter testimonies were also shot differently - some appeared as home videos while others seemed more formal. The home video testimonies give off a friendly and personable vibe that makes the viewer feel comfortable where as the formal interview gives a sense of creditability.
Participants give more in-depth interviews that can be found on the 'Discover Your World' website. Additionally, the website provides viewers with direct links to all areas of interest that can be found on Twitter so that your Twitter experience may begin.
Hey Alyssa,
ReplyDeleteJust reading your blog i have learned so much about Twitter. I am still new to it and learning more and more about it but i really do like how they are making it better with all you said. Those four questions are the key to making people feel more involved with Twitter. Even the feature with the pop culture figures sounds great. I hope to get more involved with Twitter now with all the new features that they have.
I found a really interesting article about twitter at my internship yesterday regarding how communication has changed so much in the past five years. Even though it is great that we are using social media for every advantage, the one problem with it is that there is a lack of personal conversation. By relying too much on social media, we can lose grasp of the importance of face to face conversation. It was brought up the point that simple conversation isn't so simple anymore.

Well put Alyssa! I started using Twitter over 15 months ago and I feel I am one of its biggest defenders. Why try so hard when the video says it all?
ReplyDeleteA strong Twitter following is critical in a PR campaign because it is essentially a 140 character press release to the audience. People @ mention the brand and appreciate it when you tweet mention @ back that them. It has changed the way people communicate. I had no idea you watched "Project Runway" until you tweeted me; that was a nice moment.
And Twitter made a great initiative informing the world of its fifth year anniversary; that video was certainly helpful and attention worthy.
And Pete makes a good point about personal conversations...I follow and @ mention friends more then I text them nowadays. Privacy is waste on me I suppose...
I had touched upon this in class when we got into our social media conversation. I feel Twitter is a great tool for businesses and celebrities. (I hate to use this example but Charlie Sheen for example has clearly done a great job of utilizing his Twitter). I think there are still too mnay buisnesses out there that don't know or understand how to utilize it for their companies, to creat awareness, and even some PR professionals who could use a tutorial.
ReplyDeleteWith this in mind, I also don't feel that someone who is a PR professional should use Twitter for their personal information. If you wish to promote a company or a client through your own personal Twitter then yes, great! But I don't feel knowing the mundane details of your Monday through Friday is necessary. That's what Facebook statuses are for.
I've become obsessed with social media, but then again who hasn't? We're constantly on our phones and updating what we're doing, what we like and where we are. I've had Twitter for a while now and when I first began to use it I was on a lot. It got boring though because not everyone was on and I was unsure of how to use it - plus what did I really have to say? In the past 48 hours I have used Twitter more than ever before. It's like I can't stay off of it now and I think it's mostly because I'm learning how to use it more and more everyday.
ReplyDeleteWhether it's personal use or business, Twitter is apparently having an effect on what is going on today. It's one of those nightmares PR professionals probably thought they wouldn't see, but it's here and as time changes we need to learn how to change with it. I think that Twitter is an effective tool if used correctly and I'm sure it's going to change soon just as Facebook constantly keeps changing. The lifespan seems somewhat promising.
Loved the video and your blog post! We are living in the digital age and we don't realize just how historic all of this is- its just something that is apart of our daily lives!
ReplyDeleteIts so interesting to take a step back and say - WOW, look how far social media is extending. Makes me wonder where could it go from here? We live in an exciting generation.
Alyssa, I am still a beginner with twitter. I really never understood the website or how to work it. In fact I did not even realize it has been around for 5 years. Agreeing withMelissa it really is amazing how far social media has extended. After reading this blog I understand more, and it makes it amazing how certain celebrities use their twitter to the best of their ability that it actually helps with their reputation and look.
ReplyDeleteThis video is great! Thank you for blogging about this because I am so glad I saw this video. Your blog is very informative as well. I had no idea that Twitter was that old.
ReplyDeleteThe video illustrates just how accessible information is in today's age. It specifically demonstrates how important Twitter is because of how it helps in connecting all types of people.
That was an interesting campaign from Twitter and it's amazing to see how far they've come in such a short time. I'm curious to see what the social media landscape with be like in 5 more years. Will people still be using Twitter and Facebook? Or will they go the way of Myspace? The companies, especially Facebook, seem to be branching out, but I'll be interested to see what comes up next.
ReplyDeleteHow did I miss this? I can't believe Twitter is already five, though I did start my first account in 2007... Now I feel old! I wonder what will happen with them in the next few years. Will people rebel and just stick with Facebook, or will the it keep expanding? I have a sneaking suspicion it isn't going anywahere, simply because people (and professors) are constantly talking about it's necessity.
ReplyDeleteTwitter is 5?! I had no idea it has been around that long! Really interesting campaign though that shows the usefulness of twitter, more than just a conversation site, but how that can be used to spread across a general meaning.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how far Twitter has come! I am proud to use it and think that it is a great tool to communicate with friends either socially or business wise.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that Twitter has been around for five years! This campaign is really creative. It seems like it would be hard to create a pr campaign for a site that is so regularly used for pr, but I think they did a great job!
